THE DESIGN PHILOSOPHY OF CARL SUCHY & SÖHNE: VIENNESE MODERNISM EXPRESSED THROUGH MASTER WATCHMAKING
VIENNA 1900: THE BIRTH OF VIENNESE MODERNISM
Around the turn of the twentieth century, a group of artists in Vienna joined forces to break free from the heavy ornamentation of Historicism and usher in something new. Their ambition was bold: to infuse every aspect of daily life with art. From this movement emerged two closely related yet distinct currents: the Vienna Secession and Viennese Modernism.
The Vienna Secession brought artists like Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and Koloman Moser into the spotlight. Their work fused art with everyday life, creating an entirely new aesthetic language. Beauty was meant to reveal itself in the smallest details of daily existence: in buildings, furniture, and objects. Geometric clarity, delicate ornamentation, elegant material combinations, and impeccable craftsmanship defined this style.
Shortly after, Viennese Modernism evolved from these foundations. Architects such as Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos began stripping design down to its essence. Decoration was no longer the focus. Proportion and function took centre stage. Luxury became quieter, clearer, and more enduring.
Both movements remain at the heart of Carl Suchy & Söhne's identity to this day. Our timepieces unite the elegance and sensuality of the Vienna Secession with the clarity and precision of Viennese Modernism. The result is a design language that is restrained in form yet rich in subtle detail.
Timeless elegance and the highest level of craftsmanship
Carl Suchy & Söhne translates the design philosophy of Viennese Modernism into contemporary watchmaking. Clean lines, balanced proportions, and deliberate restraint shape the visual language of our collections. At the same time, the distinctive "Suchy Twist" lends each creation an emotional depth through subtle, carefully considered details.
We work exclusively with select materials and place the highest value on precise horological craftsmanship. Our timepieces are created in partnership with master watchmakers and distinguished workshops across Switzerland and Austria, uniting technical excellence with artisanal precision. This marriage of durable materials, meticulous finishing, and enduring design gives every creation its timeless character.
MINIMALIST DESIGN RUNS THROUGH EVERY MODEL
Simplicity is the guiding principle. Our Waltz N°1 is defined by refined minimalism and seamless material transitions, hallmarks first established during the Vienna Secession era.
The curve of the crystal continues into the case. Rounded, polished edges play with the contrast between the matte dial and reflections of light. The polished lugs trace a line parallel to the bezel, extending its gleam. The gently curved strap flows naturally from the lugs. And the domed case back and lower sapphire crystal together complete the cohesive form of the Waltz N°1.
The symmetrical elements typical of Viennese Modernism are reflected on the dial through a geometrical pattern that splits the dial in the middle. The rotating seconds disc continuously breaks this pattern, giving the dial a new look every second.
THE DEVOTION TO FLOWING, PURE FORMS CONTINUES WITH OUR TABLE WALTZ
The Table Waltz collection, crafted entirely in Austria, features a silk-matte case milled from a single block of brass. Inspired by the principles of Viennese Modernism, every element is conceived as part of a harmonious whole, ensuring the timepiece reveals its beauty from every angle. The front and rear crystals are facet-cut and hand-engraved in partnership with J. & L. Lobmeyr and fit seamlessly into the conical brass housing, offering the artfully suspended movement a light-filled stage. The gear wheels display the signature Carl Suchy & Söhne motif.
THE BELVEDERE: SCULPTED FOR ELEGANCE, DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY WEAR
With the Belvedere, the bracelet joins the bezel in one unbroken sweep, creating clean lines and fluid material transitions. The result is a harmonious union of form and structure. The bead-blasted stainless steel case is accentuated by mirror-polished bezel facets, lugs, and case back. The geometrical pattern, a signature across all three Carl Suchy & Söhne lines, reappears on both the dial and the crown.
What sets this watch apart is the rotating date window, which advances each night at midnight and lends the dial a subtly different appearance every day. The golden rotor on the case back features a three-dimensional micro-engraving of Belvedere Palace, while the inner surface of the rubber strap reveals an aerial view of its Baroque gardens. With this model, too, we continue writing the distinctive design DNA of Carl Suchy & Söhne, building on our extraordinary heritage as a former purveyor to the Habsburg Imperial Court.
